The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers has approved the 802.11r Wi-Fi standard specifically developed to support seamless roaming of VoIP calls between hotspots.

The 802.11r standard will allow mobile devices to switch connections in under 50ms, securing call strength and continuity. Within this short time, security authentication and quality of service state of a VoIP call have already been determined before hopping to another hotspot.
