With design-for-test (DFT) and design-for-manufacture (DFM) methodologies rapidly absorbing test and manufacturing awareness into the design group, what's the future for the test guy in the corner of the lab?

The device complexity  has increased to such a extent that most of the work is done at the DFT/DFM level.   Characteization work cannot be done by DFT  if not all. When comes to  Mixed Signal and power management the  DFT tools are not quick enough/ smart enough  to catch up  to this market segment. On the whole the contribution of DFT  is to increase th test coverage as device complexity increases and its the test engineers who certifies it across volatge, process and tempertaure  that the chip works
