Cadence and Synopsys have been at loggerheads in the creation of the "power-aware" design methodologies. While CPF was developed internally by Cadence, Mentor Graphics, Magma Design Automation and Synopsys launched the rival Accellera Unified Power Format (UPF) effort.
Have these companies made any presentations comparing the two approaches? Let us know what you think of what the two camps have been promoting.

The market will ultimately determine which format will finally win out. These EDA companies are wasting their money (in campaigning for support) and everyone elses time. If they really want user opinion, both groups should just duke it out in open forums such as DAC with someone like John Cooly as the moderator. A poll survey can be done and the results can be provided in an open forum. The pitching groups will know who has the most user following. They can then go for an IEEE standard or some other standards body.

This is a response to the question posed here and an update on the status of CPF.

CPF was  jointly developed by Cadence with partners in its Power Forward Initiative (PFI), such as NEC, NXP, and Freescale. CPF was contributed in December 2006 to Si2’s Low Power Coalition (LPC), and voted an Si2 standard in March. The LPC consists of 18 members, including 7 IDM and fabless, 9 EDA, and 2 IP companies.

To answer the original question, the LPC performed a comparison between CPF and UPF, available from Si2 at: 66http://www.si2.org/?page=8 .  CPF 1.0, and a new CPF Pocket Guide to ease adoption, may also be downloaded from this same site.

There are 3 forward-looking LPC working groups – one documenting and elaborating the underlying information model in CPF as viewed by supporting tools and adding an API, a second documenting a complete reference flow for power-aware design, while a third group is defining requirements for future enhancements.

I would like to point out that the VLSI Design Conference 2008 to be held in Hyderabad is organizing a special session on Standards in EDA. Shrenik Mehta, Accellera Chair will be presenting the status of various technical sub-committees such as UPF and also UCIS, OVL. Please check the conference link for additional information as the abstracts posted. http://vlsiconference.com/vlsi2008/confe_conference_schedule.htm          (Session D5 - Jan 8, 2008)
